Sunday Night Suds - New Belgium Snow Day Winter Ale

This week's Sunday Night Suds looks at New Belgium's Snow Day Winter Ale.

With the weatherman finally predicting 70 degrees this week and an end to what seems like six months of 30 degree (or less) average daily temperatures, it seems like a good time to finish up my winter beers and with them, the Snow Day Winter Ale.

The Snow Day pours a dark reddish brown color with quite a bit of lacing on the glass. My first taste of the beer made me think of New Belgium's vastly underrated 1554 Black Ale (reviewed here http://kosherbeers.blogspot.com/2010/08/sunday-night-suds-new-belgium-1554.html). When clicking over to Beer Advocate to see which category they assigned to the Snow Day, I quickly realized why the taste was so familiar to me - the Snow Day was also an American Black Ale.

The beer has a great coffee-lite flavor with quite a bit of floral hops which are prominent from the first sip and through the after taste. There is a slight nuttiness to the beer as well and the flavors are complex, as can be expected with a beer with a mid grade alcohol content (6.2% abv).

I could easily see drinking one of these with a stew after a tough night of shovelling snow. Luckily, I waited until April to have one...

New Belgium Snow Day Winter Ale is under the Kosher Supervision of the Scroll-K of Colorado. Although the beer does not bear the kosher symbol on the label, it can usually be found on the bottom of the six pack holder. Please note that not every brew produced by New Belgium is under kosher supervision. For a list of the New Belgium brews currently under supervision, please click on the link on the left side of my home page for my latest Kosher Beer List.
